Of Sound Mind
Apr 24 - May 31 2025 - 2 days left
Alayna Coverly: Of Sound Mind presents new paintings by the artist that hone in on the visual complexities created by bodies entangled in motion. The artist explores ambiguous scenarios with shrouded figures wrapped in decadent fabrics, foregrounding the actions rather than the identities of her subjects. The corporeality of these figures dominates the picture plane. The placement of figures evinces the artist’s precise attention to sensuality and sinew. While Coverly captures anatomical fragments of her subjects in lush detail, the mystery behind the intentions of her subjects’ actions entices the viewer. In works such as Intertwined, the artist coaxes sumptuously folded sheets and an evocative lustre of skin out of the canvas, using detailed brushstrokes and careful attention to hue and shadow to heighten a sense of mystery and meaning. Embracing realism, the artist emphasizes gesture and intention, which seem to be intrinsically bound together in these quixotic narratives. The compositions evoke the treatment of figures as found in paintings by renowned Renaissance painters Titian and Tintoretto. Conscious of confining these figures’ movements within closely demarcated space, figures overlap: their gestures seemingly frozen in an undefined space. Contrasting dark, cool tones with the animated movements present in the composition creates an uncanny effect, subverting the viewer’s expectations. The artist’s meticulously rendered arms, legs and torsos seem to offer a window into the mindset behind these mysteriously positioned figures. On view through May 31st, Alayna Coverly: Of Sound Mind captures the latent ambiguity present in movement, delineating our actions from our psychological state and offering a nuanced approach to embodiment.
