Anna Bella Geiger’s production of the 1960s and 1970s can be inscribed in the anthropophagic lineage initiated by de Andrade in the 1920s and redefined by Oiticica in the 1960s as a strategy of resistance to the ethos of developmentalism and an imposed modernity. Her interrogation of ideas such as identity, otherness, nature, culture, geography, history, education, and society, is set against her own identity as a Brazilian, daughter of Polish immigrants, coming to terms with the country’s pre-colonial past at a time when artists viewed the logic of economic developmentalism as a renewal of the colonial logic.
